About the Team

Alexa Cassar
My name is Alexa Cassar, and I’m currently in my third term of my freshman year at Drexel
University. I’m studying environmental engineering, and my main interests in the field include
renewable energy, new and innovative means of garbage disposal, and pollution. I’m really excited to
do hands on work in the engineering design lab this term.

Frankie Lau
Hello, my name is Frankie Lau. I am a freshman at Drexel University and I am majoring in Material
Science and Engineering with a concentration in fabric and foam technology. In the future I hope to
create technology for adventures to discover new places in the harshest environments. I want to help
people to reach the places that are impossible to reach. Can’t wait to take the first steps towards my
goal in the engineering design lab!

Fernando Salcedo
My name is Fernando Salcedo. I am currently a freshman at Drexel University and I am majoring
in Computer Engineering. One day I hope to do research and work on developing new hardware and
technology for computers and machines. Our current society is taking more and more steps towards
computerized lifestyles and I want to work on making it possible. I look forward to working with my
team for our Engineering Design Lab.

Victor Mishin:
My name is Victor Mishin, and I am also a freshman at Drexel University. I am hoping to major
in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in bio-materials and tissue engineering. In the future,
I plan to use the things I learn to make a positive impact on the medical field through the application
of engineering. The current engineering design project that we are working on will allow me to get a
look into the process behind designing and implementing biomedical devices into the real world.

Week 5

For the fifth week of the design project, the group gathered in order to start drawing out the dimensions of the proposed pill dispenser. We settled on a rectangular shape, with pill compartments up top, the wiring in the back, and the delivery system on the front of the device. During the lab period of the week, the group began working on constructing the device. We started by cutting out the cardboard pieces and gluing them together. Next, the doors were constructed so that we would have easy access to the top and rear of the device. The final step was laying out the arduino board, servo motors, and wiring. All of this allowed us to get an idea of how much space we would need, and what changes we needed to make an the spot. One problem we noticed is that the top of the device was not adequately supported, so wood supports were added on the bottom in order to add strength. While Victor and Frankie worked on assembling the body of the pill dispenser, Fernando and Alexa worked on settin...

Week 10

Week 10 was the final week of our Design Project. During this week, finishing touches were added to the pill dispenser, including optimization of the code, and the locking mechanism as a fail-safe. The group also had a chance to present their project both in class, and at the senior design event, where ten freshman design groups were also allowed to present their project.

Week 4

During the fourth week of our Design Project, the team worked on sourcing and gathering all of the materials that we would need for the project. This included cardboard, hinges, servo motors, wiring, and an arduino board. The weekly lab period was used for creating the basic design concept of the device in AutoCAD, and starting the coding for the arduino board. For our first prototype, we plan on constructing the body out of thick cardboard, which will allow us to make quick adjustments and changes without the use of much hardware.   Figure 1: Front View Figure 2: Back View
